200916 – fromis_9 Q&A Q. What are your thoughts after 1 year and 3 months since the release of your special single album ‘FUN FACTORY’? Jisun: Because we’re having a comeback after so long, there is pressure for us to do well. However, because we’re showing a new side of ourselves, I’m both curious and excited as to how people will view us. I hope it will be a promotion that is filled with love and support. Gyuri: I’m nervous, but my excitement is greater. Our title song ‘Feel Good (SECRET CODE)’ is a little more mature compared to our previous songs, and I want to show our performance as soon as possible. Q. If you could describe your 3rd Mini-album ‘My Little Society’ in one word, what would it be? Hayoung: ‘Feel Good’ / Similarly to the name of our title song, it’s a feel good song and I hope that people will feel good while hearing the songs in our new album. Nagyung: Honest / We revealed each member’s individuality, an individuality that we haven’t revealed before. Jiwon: Come over / The meaning is we’re inviting you to come over to our personal little spaces where we can show our individual vibes and hobbies. Just like my answer says, we want to show you our individual spaces and invite you to come and have a good time with us. Read the full interview translated by from_usSUBS here!

2020.09.19 07:00 itskhoiHyouka Facts & Info for all your curious minds
Greeting my fellow energy-conserving friends! It has been more than 6 months since our last FAQ thread. Therefore I'm making a new one now. This version will be in text format, since infographic can sometimes be a bit hard to follow, and cost more of your precious energy. Well, same goes for reading I guess. But Houtarou himself also enjoys reading anyway. So let's dive in!
Q: Will there be a season 2 for Hyouka?
A: Not for now. The short reason being there is not enough source material to make a new season yet.
Q: What was Hyouka anime based on?
A: Hyouka was based on the Koten-bu (Classic Literature Club) novel series, written by Honobu Yonezawa and first published in 2001. It's not a light novel by the way, there were no character designs or any illustrations featured. The anime was later adopted by Kyoto Animation in 2012, and directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto. It covered the first 4 volumes of the novels. The original character designs were made by Futoshi Nishiya. These designs later became the series' key visuals, influenced the manga and featured in the novels' covers. Tragically, both Takemoto and Nishiya passed away in 2019 during the arson attack on Kyoto Animation.
Q: How many novel volumes have been release?
A: So far, six.
Q: Where can I read/buy the novel?
A: The novels were never officially translated or released in English. You can buy the Japanese version on various online stores. You can also search for the fan-translated version (by Baka-Tsuki) if you don't know how to read Japanese.
Q: When will volume 7 be released?
A: Yonezawa has confirmed on Twitter in September 2019 that he is working on volume 7. Just to have a clue of how long we should expect to be waiting, it took Yonezawa 15 years to write 6 volumes. And the latest volume 6 was released back in 2016. There was also a special volume named 'Honobu Yonezawa and the Classic Literature Club', which was released in 2017. It's a stand-alone novel talking about Yonezawa's creation process of the Koten-bu series. It also features one new short story called 'The Tiger and the Crab, or The Murder of Houtarou Oreki'. SPOILER: There is no murder. Shocking, I know.
Q: Is there a Hyouka manga?
A: Yes, there is a Hyouka manga written & illustrated by Task Ohna, using Nishiya's original character designs. It was released from 2012 to 2019 in 12 tankoubon volumes (book format). They covered pretty much the same stuff as the anime did (volume 1 to 4). Task Ohna is also working on a Hyouka manga sequel, which covers volume 5 & 6.
Q: Where can I read/buy the manga?
A: You can read some of them on MangaDex. Yes, only some of them. Sadly, the translating team dropped the project after chapter 10, and since then no team has decided to pick it up yet. As for buying, it's a bit complicated. Much like the novels, the manga also remains UNLICENSED in English. Yet it was licensed in Germany and Italy by the end of 2013. Weird, I know. But if you really want to buy the manga in English, there's a workaround: The manga is also licensed in Malaysia and Singapore, and for some reason they have an English version of the manga there. While it's not an official English release, it's still better than nothing. Thanks u/dovahkrid for letting us know.
Q: When will the manga sequel be released?
A: The sequel hasn't been released in tankoubon yet. But the chapters are being published on Shounen Ace. Unfortunately in July 2020, Kadokawa Shoten stated that the manga will go on hiatus due to Task Ohna's illness. It's not COVID by the way, just an undisclosed illness. So expect to wait for a long time.
Q: Which manga chapter should I read after finishing the anime?
A: Exactly where the manga sequel started, which should be chapter 76 on MangaDex.
Q: The wiki states that the first manga has 12 tankoubon volumes, which have 50 chapters in total. Then why the sequel started at chapter 76? Where are the missing 26 chapters?
A: Well ain't that's a mystery. Are you curious now? You see, this is the reason why Hyouka is such a special series. You'll have to dive deep into it to figure out this question for yourself. Q: WHAT?? A: Just kidding. This is because the manga was also published on Shounen Ace, which was divided into 75 chapters instead of 50 like the tankoubon volumes. So don't worry about it, there are no missing chapters. Just start reading at chapter 76 if you want to continue from the anime. It's not like you have anything else to read after chapter 10 either...
Q: Is there a specific order that I should follow if I want to read the novel?
A: No. Just read them chronologically as normal. This isn't the Monogatari series.
Q: Okay, but I still don't wanna read the novel. Can you please please tl;dr me if Chitanda and Oreki ever become a couple?
A: As for now, no. They still have chemistry, but they haven't dated/confessed yet. Romance was never Yonezawa's priority in the first place. He does tease a little bit once in a while but that's about it.
Q: I find Hyouka story boring, but I love the character designs! Am I welcome here?
A: Anybody is welcome on this subreddit regardless of opinions. As long as they are respectful, contributing, and within our rules. But wait, before you submit a "I dislike Hyouka it's so boring" post. Mind you that it's generally a pointless idea to say that you dislike something, to a community which is dedicated to that very thing. Unless you can construct some solid, unbiased points to have a serious discussion about the series' strengths and weaknesses. Banking on "it's just my opinion" ain't gonna cut it.
Q: Wasn't there a live-action adaptation of Hyouka in 2017?
A: Yes but we don't talk about that here. Q: Why not? A: You know why. Q: No I don't? A: Okay jokes aside, it's bad. Like really bad... Not only it failed as an adaptation, but also as a movie. The movie covered Hyouka's first mystery surrounding Jun Sekitani and the club's anthology, just like the anime did. But unlike the anime, the movie's cinematography is boring, the music is uninspiring, and the pacing is terrible. The acting is kind of acceptable, but the dialogues are unbearable. You can still watch it if you are really curious. But even with Chi-chan's level of kininarimasu, I would still strongly advise you to avoid it.
Q: What can I do to fill the gap in my soul after finishing Hyouka then?
A: Well... if you already finished the anime/manga/novel then the best you could do is to spend time with us here. You can discuss, ask questions, make hypotheses, enjoy fan arts, etc., and have fun together!
Q: Is there any similar anime to Hyouka that I should watch?
A: This pretty much comes to personal preferences. Hyouka is quite different, in term of mystery genre. It doesn't have an evil mastermind behind a shadow organization. It doesn't have a gruesome murder in a locked room to be solved, or a grandiose heist to be stopped. No. Hyouka, despite its genre, is all about the characters and how they interact with each others, as well the the world around them. You can say it's more slice of life than mystery. The mysteries of Hyouka are just layers, used in Yonezawa's way of storytelling. They seem mundane, but they are all real and grounded. The most popular recommendation after Hyouka is perhaps OreGairu, which is pretty good and similar to Hyouka in many ways. It also used romance much like how Hyouka used mysteries. OreGairu actually focused more on interpersonal relationships & school lives, rather than just being another romcom. But it still managed to be very funny, and you can feel the tension of love between characters. It's a cool show. Check it out. Personally, I would also recommend Tsuki ga Kirei, another anime that's also very real and grounded like Hyouka. But instead of dabbling in mystery, it's all about romance - the one thing that Hyouka currently lacks. That makes it's the perfect show to cure your post-Hyouka depression in my opinion. Much like Hyouka, there is no antagonist here. No melodramas, no huge misunderstandings, and no cliche character tropes either. It's just an honest and down to earth show, about a bunch of nice kids dealing with their first loves/crushes. Also, it's the only anime I know that features parents. Yes, REAL parents that are not either loli moms or crazy otaku dads. It's a good show. Check it out too. And here are some bonus fun facts (that you probably already knew) before the FAQ ends:
Despite Chi-chan's popularity, Ibara is actually the darling character to most of the anime staffs - both in terms of design and personality. Why you ask? Well.
Speaking of Ibara. During the Kanya Festival, she cosplayed as three different characters. They are: Frolbericheri from 11-nin Iru! (episode 12), Akko from Himitsu no Akko-chan (episode 14), and Senri Mariko from Nanairo Inko (episode 16). Well you might think that Ibara must be a boomer then. But Hyouka's setting was way back in 2000s, so those characters were pretty appropriate to cosplay.
Ibara is also the shortest member of the Classics Literature Club, standing at 148cm (no I'm not gonna shut up about Ibara). Compared to other members which are: Chitanda at 160cm, Satoshi at 163cm, and of course our boy Oreki being the tallest at 176cm.
One of the dishes Chitanda made at the Cooking Contest was Giseyaki, which is basically a tofu mixture with egg and topped by a layer of black sesame seeds. It's a very traditional Japanese dish, which was well-suited for Chitanda's character.
Have you ever wondered about those lines in mid-episode that sound like they belong in a poem? They are called eyecatches, and here is one of those eyecatches:
When all creation radiates pure, clear, and bright, And we learned what grass bloomed this sprout. When the air of summer starts to rise, All creation teems with life, and trees and grasses grow full.
Sound pretty cool, right? Well they are not actually poetry at all, in fact they don't even rhyme in Japanese. Well it's not like rhyming is that big of a deal in Japanese poetry anyway (because of the language's phonology). But also it's not like I have studied enough Japanese to know if something is poetic or not in the first place! So don't let me stop you from posting those on Instagram. Anyway, they belong to something call Koyomi Binran (暦便覧) - a book published in the Edo period that was some sort of "guideline" to the Japanese 24solar terms. It is a bit complicated subject, you can check out this website to see the full descriptions if you know Japanese. But I'll try to give you a more "simple" explanation regarding this. You see, solar terms originated in China, and then spread to many Asian countries including Japan. Think of them like a seasonal period that matches a particular astronomical event, or signifies some natural phenomenon during a year. Oh yeah, getting dizzy yet? Don't worry, it'll only get dizzier from there. For example: Episode 1's eyecatch is Rikka , which occurs around May 6th in the solar calendar, or April in the lunar calendar. Yes, there are TWO calendars now. DEAL WITH IT. Rikka is the period where crops enter their peak season for growth, the winds are refreshing but also getting hotter, and you can feel the signs of summer in the air. This also tied with the theme of episode 1, being the reborn of the Classic Literature Club. And everything's getting hotter as Chi-chan's getting closer to Houtarou. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) And that was just ONE of the TWENTY TWO episodes. I'm not going to go any further since I'll probably embarrass myself and bring shame upon my Japanese teacher. So the important takeaway here is that every single episode in Hyouka represents one of the 24 solar terms, and each episode have an eyecatch which gives description to the solar term it represents. Phew! That's a wrap on this FAQ. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. If you find something that you think is incorrect or disagree with, don't hesitate to comment either. I will update the list accordingly as the thread goes. And finally, one more last thing....

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
A lot of 3d rendering, mostly with cinema 4d. Some photo/video editing here and there, not really into gaming. Building for a friend, who's using an old prebuilt from 2012, so I'm hoping to surprise him with this one.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
About 2.5k-3k SGD (1.8-2.2kUSD)
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Hopefully within the next week or two, but willing to wait a little longer for the newer parts to be released. Hope to get it done before November though.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Towepreferable IPS/4k Monitor
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Singapore, but some parts are cheaper on Amazon US (RAM, storage)
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Preferably a Ryzen build, as I've never built Intel before. However, I'm willing to build intel as I've read that Intel has stronger single core performance which is preferred for 3d rendering, but correct me if I'm wrong. At least 500gb NVMe, total at least 1TB.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
He's not a big fan of full on RGB, but he did say he would like a black/emo colour scheeme/theme going on.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

Hi, kitsune! Here are a selection of the best quizzes we had in the special member threads! This thread will be permanently linked in the special member threads, so it will be easy to come back to it. Here the links are permanent.
Good luck and have fun!
QUESTION (pochette 0) Warm-up: What is a "pochette"?
QUESTION (pochettes 1) First of all, let thanks again Ramstudel104 who provided the sleeves pics and the infos on them! Ok let's start! To begin the quiz, just have a look to this sleeve Nice one right? So let's begin with a warm-up question (this one doesn't count really). From which ancient culture the artwork is inspired?
QUESTION (pochettes 2) First let's say "Thank you" to Ramstudel104 who provided me the sleeves! First of all, have a look to these 3 pictures: Picture 1 ; & Picture 2 ; & Picture 3. Good? Ok; let's go then! First question, an easy one for the warm up! who is represented on these pictures?
Next question: the 3 sleeves are from three different versions of the Ijime, Dame, Zettai first press edition (2013). All these 3 singles feature IDZ (obviously), a special version of IDZ (air version) and one another song. Which one?
Next question: There are three editions of this single. One featuring Moa, one featuring Yui and one featuring Su. Do you know what is colour of the background on the Moa version? Here is a hint you may need: this colour is one of the colour associated to a girl in the Mini-Pati band from Sakura Gakuin.
Next question: As we see this word is generally translated as "world reformation". During the XIXth century, at the end of the "Edo period", a few years before the Meiji Restoration and the modernisation of Japan, a series of disastrous earthquakes occured in Japan. Many Japanese thought that a "Yonaoshi God" named "Namazu" was the responsible. This "god" was depicted as an animal: do you know which one?
let's have a look to this picture. As you can see, this is a "Babymetalized" sleeve of an album. it is also the occasion to give a special shoutout to futonsrf! Do you know what is the band who made the original album?
QUESTION (knowledge of the shows 2) In march 2014, two important shows took place at the famous Nippon Budokan arena. There were two parts: Black night and Red night. First question, which one came first: Black Night or Red night?
Ok, next: The story from the precedent question is known thanks to a set of three books written in the 8th or 9th century. It's full name is a bit long (日本国現報善悪霊異記), but it has a shorter name... Do you know this name?
QUESTION (culture 3) So, as you can see in the "TITLES" section, the highest title you can win is "9 tails kitsune". Kitsune, in Japanese mythology, are said to grow a new tail as they get older. The more a kitsune grows tails, the more powerful it is. So here is the question: do you know how many time does it take to grow a new tail?
However, the system establishing progressive stage of power accordingly to the number of tails is not found in the old kitsune tales. Do you know when this idea appeared and then become canonical in the kitsune lore?
And finally here is the nasty question: In the lyrics there is this sentence:
it's the period of war. Winners enjoy heaven.
In Japanese lyrics the word used for «period of war» is «Sengoku». In fact this word translates as «the warring states» which refers to an actual period of Japan History, but also to a period of Chinese History... Amongst the following possibilities, 2 are actual «Sengoku period», one Chinese and one Japanese. Which ones? [reminder: BC means «Before Christ»; CE means «Common Era» or after Christ]
· US market were closed for labor day holidays last night. European equities advanced amidst EUR weakness with autos and utilities leading gains. Brexit back in focus ahead of the next round of trade talks, with PM Johnson set 15-Oct as a deadline to reach a Brexit deal whilst reports suggest reported Britain will accept a no-deal scenario and move on if there is no breakthrough by that date. · Exports out of China rose 9.5% in August, accelerating from the 7.2% y-o-y growth rate seen in July. The recovery is also broadening with products outside of medical and electronic equipment showing good signs of recovery. This is consistent with global manufacturing PMI readings which are suggesting improvement in trade and manufacturing. Within HK/China, our most preferred exported related plays are Shenzhou International (2313 HK), Techtronics (669 HK) and Minth (425 HK) · SMIC (981 HK) slumped -17% yesterday on reports the US may be considering placing the company on the restricted entity list, which could block shipments of US semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This came at the back of a series of policies announced by China to support the development of its semiconductor industry for the next 5 years. Currently, China’s foundries are still 3-4 years behind Taiwan’s leading edge foundry technologies and restriction on US capital equipment, given the lack of alternatives, will make it even harder for SMIC to close the gap. The potential long term implication for the sector is that it may be negative for semiconductor production equipment manufacturers such as Applied Materials and Lams Research, but it could be positive for foundries such as TSMC (2330 TT) and UMC (2303 TT) as rising competition from Chinese foundries is temporarily averted. Nonetheless we generally have a cautious view on semiconductors in the near term on inventory destocking concerns. · Quick trade idea on Fraser Centerpoint Trust (FCT SP). Stock looks like its potentially breaking out of its recent $2.30 to $2.60 consolidation range and may make a move towards $3. The key driver of sentiment was the acquisition of some retail assets in Singapore from Asia Retail Fund, which could add a mid to high single digit DPU accretion to the REIT. The assets added are also of high quality, namely Tiong Bahru Plaza, White Sands, Hougang Mall, Century Square and Tampines 1. FCT on the other hand also divested Bedok Point, which has been seen as a troubled asset due to the stiff competition of retail space in Bedok. FCT is currently trading at implied 4.5% FY21 dividend yield on a normalized basis which is consistent with the range it was trading at in 2019. However, with US10 year yields lower today than what it was 12 months ago, we could argue further yield compression is possible, once its earnings outlook stabilize.
2020.09.08 02:30 Blazinter[Gunpla/Gundam plastic models] "Premium Bandai" and why it is the most hated thing in the community worldwide.
TL;DR: Some decisions from Bandai related to model kits of robots hardly makes any sense, affecting even their own possible profits. Annoys the heck out of literal millions of people accross the earth. Warning: I apologize in advance if some of my writting feels weird. I blame disgraphia and english not being my native language. I also apologize if this feels more like a quarrel that should go for the weekly post, and the possibility of this matter having been posted already in this sub. I tried to look for it, but I haven't found anything (in fact, haven't found anything Gunpla-related). I felt inspired to write about this topic once I've noticed the post about the recent bullpoo of a specific model supplies brand, and also the matter with a Jurassic Park toy. Fortunately the very few instances of drama within this hobby has never got to be any big of a deal. If anything, the collaterals of the circlejerks within the Gundam fandom about "this show bad. I haven't watched it but people says is bad, so I'll agree it is bad" that they suffer so often in our occidental side. (Btw, not everyone onto Gundam is onto Gunpla, neither viceversa. Some people just dig the shows, some people just digs the cool robots.) But I'm digressing. There's just one matter that affects everyone in the hobby, that is a constant to this day: "P-Bandai." But before I actually get onto it, I'd like to give some more context within this hobby in general, to make you able to understand better why the fuss is, well, such a fuss:
Some keys as to why Gunpla got to be so prominent
Gunpla, short for "gundam plastic model kits" has been going on short after the very release of the first show of the meta-franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam. The show at first wasn't very successful as even for the time it got released (april 1979) its animation quality already felt quite dated even back then. It wasn't until Katsumi Kawaguchi, more known as "Meijin Kawaguchi", felt like building entirely from scratch his own Gundam model (not having existed any official kit as of yet). The model hobby magazine "Hobby Japan" coincidentally was looking for someone that could achieve such feat; contacted Kawaguchi to commission him to make a model of a "Zaku II" (the main mass-produced grunt unit of the antagonist faction of the show). This ordeal and the great success of the magazines reporting about those two builds got the attention of Sunrise, the animation studio of the show (which also belongs to Bandai). Hiring Kawaguchi pretty much on the spot as advisor (today he's the head of marketing of all related to Gunpla, by quite the merit at that) and trying their luck in creating the first gunpla kits ever; something so successful that it saved the show entirely, starting the snowball effect that would lead to how the franchise is such a phenomenon today, as same as the other phenomenon of the model kits themselves. There's various merits as to how Bandai got to be so successful with their model kits. Namely, contrary as most of their competence, they produced the molds by themselves, and produced the kits by themselves, and not a random 3rd company somewhere else like likely China. This got them to the habit of keeping the molds of their kits, and never discarding them. So again, contrary to most of their competence, they reprinted their kits very often. No matter how old they were. This principle stays to this very day, in which the very only model kits they've ever officially discontinued were because of them being less-successful recolors of other similar kits, or the so far unique case of one of the respective molds being broken. In fact: today you could buy a freshly "printed" kit of a model that could perfectly been originally produced 45 years ago! The production of the physical molds of a model kit is the expensiest and most labourious part on the whole development of a model kit by absolute far. This last bit, and the fact that one of the constants of these models' catalogue is how they're constantly pseudo-perma-available almost any time, are some of the most important bits to take in mind in this whole matter.
"Alright but tell us what the heck is Premium Bandai"
Premium Bandai, more commonly shortened as "P-Bandai", is an exclusively online shop in which Bandai sells predominantly preorders of articles of theirs which, for one reason or another, they've have decided to make limited. Premium if you will. This includes some specific gunpla kits as well. In principle, their intent with going out of their own norm about the availability of some of their kits was because there's specific cases they thought there'd be a bit of demand, but not quite enough to justify a retail release, like a specific Suit with a model kit already existing but with the color scheme representing a different faction, or the personal colors of an ace pilot, as example. This way they could hype up these releases which under normal circumstances would have likely sold less, and even become "dead stock" in the shelves of some shops, which apparently is sort of a problem within Japan. Now, in Japan, interestingly, one of the things that people loves the most, is the experience of adventure of going to a physical store, and see all of those piles of literal hundreds of different model kits. Either trying to find the specific one they're looking for, or trying to decide for one among all of them, are like adventures all by themselves. So as starters, most of the Japanese people that feels that way and values it as a tradition, already suffer a grudge towards having to get a specific kit of their desire by the "lame and soul-less" process as is preordering it and getting it delivered to their homes. But in the end of the day was alright because those recolors mostly only appealed to collectors rather than hardcore modelers. People still was able to take the retail color version of the respective kit, and paint it to those other specific colors, or even their own unique ones of their please. Buuuuuuut this got worse when the exclusivities crossed the boundaries beyond just recolors. They'd release kits which while based in suits that already got kit'd, would have exclusive weapons, or aesthetic pieces. Now, you MUST order from these limited releases, hardly ever reprinted (if ever) if you want those pieces (That or being among the biggest pros of the hobby and make them by yourself, which isn't precisely an easy task). Now, we know why Japan has a grudge againts P-Bandai. But what about the entire rest of the world? You see, P-Bandai.jp only delivers within Japan, and Japan alone. (Eventually China and Singapore got their sites as well, but they're minor compared to the main one. North America just months ago got their own too, but we'll get onto that later) If you were an occidental "gunpla'er", your usual course of action was ordering your "plastic crack" from any regular japan-based online shop that shipped worldwide, or pay overpriced within your local alternatives. If you weren't living in japan, and there was an exclusivity you wanted, you had to wait for resellers to get hold of it. You're paying extra for rarity, plus the inflation for the benefit for the reseller. A model kit which original price could have been 20$, now hardly ever would be under 45$. And if it was printed long ago, it'd be further expensier. The whole fandom feels kind of entitled to their kits being cheap, because Bandai sells them for absurdly cheap. They sell the objectively best plastic model kits on earth at the price of cheap toys, because of the bulk. And they make mad cash still. In fact, they're making such money that is making the Gundam franchise grossing more than One Piece and almost as much as Dragon Ball, despite Gundam suffering still to this day the status of 'niche' outside most of the world outside Asia. But this is only the beginning:
100% entirely new models being premium
May 2014, "Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Missing Link" gets released, a game for the Playstation 3 console. This game also had a collector edition with a goodie that caught everyone by surprise: a whole model kit based in the most prominent mecha of one of the many stories within the game, the Pale Rider. This model kit wasn't based in any other previously made one. It wasn't a slight re-do of an existing one nor way less a mere recolor. This already got the fandom under the alarms, but ultimately, people didn't mind it much back then. A year later tho... It would come back, for good and for worse. It would come back as a P-Bandai exclusive. Not only that, but with new unique weaponry as well. People loves this specific design still to this day, a lot. People can't grasp over their minds still to this day why Bandai is potentially limiting their possible profits on al already beloved design, specially when its respective pieces are from a brand new mold (you know, the expensiest part of the development of a model kit, effort and investment you'd like to profit from as much as possible). Through all these years, Bandai has reprinted this kit various times. But unlike other regular kits, which you could see being reprinted after 1-4 months (heck, sometimes even twice within the same month), the Pale Rider has only seen an amount of reprints during these years that can be counted with the fingers of one of your hands. This would set precedent for them to, still within a logic that no one has grasped yet, do the same for other future kits that despite having their own respective unique molds, would be limited as well. In fact, those recolors that were the original reason for this gig to be, hardly ever gets to happen anymore. Japan felt gradually more annoyed by this ordeal, but hey, they can still buy them by themselves with no problem beyond the boring experience of not going to a shop physically, something occident can't even do themselves. This would provoke the entirety of the occidental fanbase feel quite insulted. They've acquired the general feeling that Bandai explicitly doesn't want their money, because making a kit a P-Bandai exclusive, instantly means they cannot acquire it in an official way. Wound rubbed further in when they're kits quite unique and cool by themselves. This would become the norm for a handful of years, to everyone's disgrace. But oh boy it got *worse.
Woundwort, "Half Life 3 of Gunpla", and how to easily anger people across the entire earth
The Gundam franchise doesn't only consist of animated stuff, there's written media too. There's a specific serialized story that eventually would get novelized, "Advance of Zeta", which got quite the praise due to the remarkably unique and generally loved aesthetic of their mechanical designs, unique within the entirety of the franchise. The most noteworthy Mobile Suit of said story that people loved the most, was the TR-6 Woundwort. Since it got to be a thing, it eventually became the suit of the whole franchise that was desired the most to be represented in kit format. This snowballing from back to the year 2002. Bandai sporadically made merchandise of this suit, but never a kit. "Is it too complex?" "Is the copyright of Advance of Zeta different because of it being published by a specific magazine?" We've never got any answer. Despite this going on for more than decade and half, the Woundwort would be quite prone to lead on polls of the Gundam they want to see the most either animated or most predominantly, in kit format. Due to how long that ordeal has been going on, it was just plainly assumed that it'd never happen, while the wishes still were as alive as ever, if not gradually higher. Reaching meme status even. People made their own unnofficial resin model kits of this particular gundam, even a chinese company made their own ilegal plastic model kit of the Woundwort. Then one mysterious day, inside the Gundam Base (that place with the real life-sized Gundam being exposed), to everyone's heartstroke-inducing levels of surprise, a prototype of a Woundwort model kit got shown! The entire fanbase was shaken. It finally happened! And with quite the joy, as they didn't assume this experience would be any tainted. But... it did get tainted. They've made a brand new bunch of molds for their peak most asked kit, by absolute far. This felt even moreso of a back-stab because, when Bandai shows a prototype announcing a new model kit, they tell if it is a P-Bandai release or not right away, something which they did NOT do when revealing the prototype of this Woundwort model kit (notice the lack of the P-Bandai tag in that white paper describing the article. You can see an example here on the reveal of this other P-Bandai model kit, revealed almost at the same time. Imagine how gamers would feel if Half Life 3 finally happened, but only with few copies, available just for sale in a single country, with no shipping option outside whatsoever, being forced to pay the inflation from the modellers which were VERY well aware of how much desired this kit was. Everyone in the hobby, period (excluding some rich people, perhaps), was noticeably pissed off by this nonsensical decision. Even Japan, which they themselves were the ones able to order them without issue, was royally pissed off. Some people did even bother to calculate how much potential profit Bandai are not getting by this decision. Short time before the Woundwort happened, and specially after it happened, Bandai kept making more and more unique models as premium, without logic to be found yet, and to everyone's annoyance.
Light inside the tunnel?
There is an american company, Bluefin, which these last years has been managing to be Bandai's main associate at the business of distributing stuff within north america, including Gunpla. They've been aware for the longest time that bringing P-Bandai kits to america would be a great gig, but it took quite a while for Bandai to bother themselves to allow that, and when they did, they did it with the stuff that was legitimately leftover stock of specific kits they knew right away that wouldn't sell well even within Japan. Fortunately as years passed, Bandai has been realising about how the potential for the occidental market hasn't even tapped its proper potential, and began to purposely aim to hit more this market outside Asia. They even have started to build a second gunpla factory to boost their production of model kits x2. (There's a lot of reasons as to how Gunpla got to such global blooming "boom" and how it is becoming gradually more popular, but that's another long story, unfitting of this sub.) So to surprise of everyone, with collaboration of Bluefin, America got its own website for P-Bandai products. They slowly got to tackle preorders of every new P-Bandai model kit and re-release which has been happening simultaneously as Japan's. Sadly due to the piss-poor timing of certain historical event we all are suffering related to a pandemic, people didn't have much experience with them yet to say how good all is going so far. Covid striked the earth shortly after the website was announced, sabotaging the agility of the processing of the orders and how "early" they would be shipped. These still has a high price in that site, but at least is finally less than what you'd require to pay to resellers. So some american people remains annoyed, while some others are overjoyed. Meanwhile... If you are not in the USA, Japan, China, nor Singapore, you're still fricked. People still has the perception that USA = all of occident. Europe specially, hasn't seen much sight of official support nor providers to this market yet,(only a random lame italian company which everyone hates) while USA has been pretty much working hard from the ground-up to get this to happen. So, between the negatives of P-Bandai itself, and the fact that more than half of the world still has to overpay for these, this got to be, even if pretty much the only one of this hobby, a drama filled with rage, sadness, frustration, and even motivation for people to leave the whole hobby altogether, affecting millions of people all around the whole globe. Possible questions:
Some "mainstream" model kits such as tanks or planes costs the average price of a P-Bandai model kit listed on ebay. Is people really whining that much?
Ye. You see, Bandai's model kits are pre-colored, articulated, a nice bunch of the times with perfect part separation with minimal need for masking if you get to paint them, and they don't require any glue whatsoever unless you get some of the very first ones from the '80s. Most people that buys gunpla aren't actual proper "modelers". They build them right out of the box and collect them. They feel like articulated figures right away. Between the price and quality, the whole fandom not only tends to feel like anything that is expensier than what they're already used to pay is, well, expensive, but also does even feel like "mainstream" model kits are lame.
When I click the japanese site for P-Bandai, it tells me that they have international shipping. Why the fuss then?
Because is a mislead that borders the blatant lie. They redirect you either other of their subsidiaries from other countries (list that is extremely limited as told by now), or to other websites that offers proxy-services to buy stuff from japan for you. These proxy sites buys the stuff from japan for you (not only P-Bandai, but anything else from Japan, like Yahoo Auctions, or Amazon.jp). You gotta pay them the shipping from the respective site to their warehouse, and then the second shipping from their warehouse to your house, and of course the extra margin for them to profit from. The difference in base price makes them no different than purchasing from resellers at all. Hope my writting didn't bore you or made you bleed out of your eyes, and you found this interesting. Wouldn't be weirded that between my disgraphia and that this took me way much longer to write than anticipated, going down to the wee hours of the night; got this bunch of text to have typos or words missing or something >.> At least I can fix that with effort (hopefully), contrary as my whims for specific plastic robots without overpaying! [Canned laughter]
2020.08.31 13:14 affzdnFuture boyfriend, where you at babe?
Brief intro about me: I'm 25, cis-gendered male, pansexual living in a small country called Singapore. So.... I came out as bi some time in 2016/2017 after I had a really sad breakup with my ex-girlfriend of 2 years. It was a tumultuous relationship but I figured myself during those 2 years. After coming out as bi and after countless protected hookups, I slowly starting to realize that I'm more than just bi. I'm pansexual. Of course, I want to stop these whole hooking up thing because I find it risky and I know I want more than just a hookup. I thought having a boyfriend would be much healthier for me, sexually. I've tried the whole FWB/regular with guys on Grindr but I realized that there was an underlying problem with hookup culture; we always want to try something new. It's been 4 years now and that's how long I am on dating apps like Tinder and Okcupid. However, I could barely snag a date. From 2016 till now, I only went on 4-5 dates, all of which were kinda 'meh' to me. I do get matches and conversations but it doesn't always last very long. Some of them don't check their notifications, they're always busy, etc. One of the more striking patterns from these chats was, they're handicap when it comes to carrying a conversation. So it wasn't always reciprocal in that sense. Well, me and my over-thinking, I tend to analyze way too much to the point where I would catch myself apologizing to these people. Apologized if I ever offended them which led to the conversation dying off or stop abruptly. I'm so desperate in wanting to be in a same-sex relationship with someone because I know, in some way, its different from a hetero relationship. Plus, I believe that 4 years is a longggggg time to be single so high time, I should look for a boyfriend now. But it's just so hard to date here in Singapore. It's so small that everybody has mutual friends. I would always share about this struggle with my close friends and they said that, maybe, my 'market' isn't here. Oh well, who knows? Do you guys face the same struggle like me? What would you do if you were in my position? If you guys could give me advice or share your thoughts and opinions, that would be great! Would love to read them. Thank you (:
In the past week since Dynamite’s release, it has already achieved a lot. With permission, I have decided to compile all these achievements in this megathread, following the same format as the previous BTS achievements megathread for Map of the Soul: 7, edited for song (not album) achievements only. bangtan also has a similar megathread found here! Any and all accomplishments, records, or milestones by the group during this comeback season can be added into the comments of this post. I will then copy them up here into some tidy lists. Some achievements will be allowed as individual posts on their own. Here is a potential shortlist based on the rules. This list of achievements CAN be posted outside of this thread:
#2 on first Billboard Global 200 chart (3rd week of Dynamite’s release) (Posted)
This isn't a complete list, but please ask the mods (not me) if something can be posted on its own that isn't listed here! This is a list of achievements, which mostly CANNOT be posted outside of this thread:

2020.08.15 18:43 OculusfluffyWan Pway? - by Oculus (xpost from fluffybooru) (Part 1)
Originally posted on: https://www.fluffybooru.com/post/view/57749 “Wan Pway?” ~Alternatively titled “Excerpts from the Diary of Tan Teck Sing, James~ ~By Oculus~ Part 1 31 January 202X I sometimes wonder why I write in diary. It seems like an incredibly effeminate thing to do, and it is not a fact that I share with just about anyone. I started the practice of writing in a diary when I was doing National Service. For three long months I was away from home and family with no one to really confide in. While I got to know and adapt to platoon, I sort of resented them. Being a junior college graduate who enrolled later, I got stuck with the polytechnic and ITE graduates who were a very different crowd from who I knew, along with the dropouts The idea of writing a journal entry isn't foreign to me. When I was in secondary school, I grew up on facebook, and then tumblr, before making a move to livejournal, which seemed cosier and less noticed. However, without access to internet, I had to make do with a physical book. Hiding my diary from the other recruits would be difficult and I was called ‘girly’ and ‘gay’ for doing so. To the best of my ability, I tried to make my posts as inoffensive as possible. Still, my diary got defaced and vandalised from time to time, but I stuck to it, having to constantly tear out the pages other people had written it. Eventually, I was selected for training in the Officer Cadet School (OCS), where I was grouped with more like-minded fellows. Keeping a diary there was easier and by then, the diary I kept during that period was a lot cleaner and less affected than the one I had during BMT. I don't know if I lost or deliberately threw away my BMT diary, but I still have my OCS diary, to remind me of the year I spent training to be an officer. This practice followed me into university. Even as I got more sociable and started hanging out with people, there were some thoughts and ideas that I just didn't feel ready to put into an online journal for all to see. Looking back at how I was initially in the sciences, to switching to the humanities in junior college, my family balked at the idea. But I just love literature. And I love reading books. And the English language. As much as I came from an all-Chinese family, I was raised by my parents in English, and pretty much every facet of my life had been dominated by the English language. I am familiar with the businesses and people that want to push for a stronger Mandarin presence, owing to the influence of China and our Chinese majority, but to me, English is just the more comfortable and interesting language. I always harboured a dream of going to Oxford to study but, alas, my mediocre results meant that the best I could manage was an entry into the National University of Singapore, where I barely got a Bachelors in Literature. It has been about two months since I've been teaching what is now my third class of students at this Primary school. I always wanted to be a teacher, and after being trained in MOE, I was finally allocated to one of the neighbourhood primary schools. (a guy I disliked from my adolescence who got to study abroad is currently teaching English at JC level, the lucky bastard) Young children are a handful and are difficult to work with, but I try my best. The bigger problem these days seems to be the rise in autism - as each year goes by, there seems to be more children with high-functioning autism being in my classes. Dealing with them is a real test of my patience, and I sometimes wonder to myself why I am a teacher. But I try. 3rd February 202X Something is bugging me today. When I entered the class to teach English, one of the children, Henry I think, started speaking to me with a lisp. but it wasn't just the lisp. It was his choice of language. I'm going to try and remember how the conversation goes "Now class, I have four words here. Cat, ball, dog and cooking. Which of these four words isn't a noun?" No one raises their hands. I point at Henry "Henry, which of the four is not a noun?" "Fwuffy nu understan, nice mistah. Am having thinkie pwaces huwties." I blink my eyes. "Excuse me?" "Cooking." I don't know if that actually came from Henry, or someone else in the class About half an hour later, we were reading the story about the Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen. While reading it, I remember what Henry said at one point "Duckwing am poopie babbeh! Mummah duckie nu wuv! Gib poopeh duckwing sowwy huwties!" I don't know if Henry is joking or if its his autism. He was mentioned by his parents to be suffering from autism 14th February 202X Chinese New Year celebrations at the school just concluded. I'm taking the time off to update my diary because why not. I will be busy for most of this evening and tomorrow. First will be the reunion dinner, and tomorrow will be visiting more relatives. Thankfully, I'm single currently, so the pool of relatives I visit won't be that large. Also, as a single individual, I can still receive angpaos from my elders. The one thing I am looking forward to is the long weekend. I don't have anything planned for Sunday, or Monday, and Monday is currently Hari Raya. (I can't remember if its Puasa or Haji, I'm neither Malay nor a Muslim) 16th February 202X With nothing better to do, I decided to sit down and watch some Sunday Morning cartoons. I'm a big fan of animation. I used to enjoy reruns of stuff like classic Duckstory, the FlowerFluff Gals and, of course, My Little Fluffy. That last two was made by the same company, Hassenfeld. They have also made other cartoons like The Fluffiest Pet Store and PoundDogs. And of course, I do like the action stuff, like reruns of Strong-Man and G.I. Prawn: Real South-African Hero. Yet none of the cartoons today just seem to be any good. A recurring thing I see in cartoons these days is this cheap design. That they have this big grin that you can't avoid. Watch any cartoon released after 2015, and you start to see it. They call it the ‘CalArts smile’. The themes and topics of these cartoons are also lacking, in addition to the poor animation. There's no big adventure or recurring storyline. Almost every episode is a simple gag, told with bland humour. I swear I've seen at least one episode that had too many flatulence jokes. After a while, I got frustrated and switched off the television. My brother, whose younger than me by about 5 years and is still in university, notices my frustration. "Wassup, bro?" "Cartoons suck these days." "Nobody watches TV anymore, bro. Everybody watches youtube these days, especially the kids." 16th February 202X I have no idea what the fuck I've just watched. I decided to try out youtube kids, to see what passes for children's entertainment these days. At first glance, the content seemed educational. There is the usual content provided by channels like PBS and Discovery. All open, fairly accessible, nothing offensive. But then, one of the videos that I eventually got recommended was something simply titled "Nutewwa song" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25-zU5X_tEM Its literally just one guy, holding a jar of nutella, repeating the lines "Nutewwa, nuttewwa, I wuv nuttewwa. wub wub wub, nuttewwa wub nuttewwa" The thing goes on for literally four minutes. I had to fast forward to see if the lyrics changed. They did not. I then see a video with a long title, but I could roughly summarize to being about teaching children how to count to five. However, what I got was more bizarre https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTEmCTZON3A It has human actors, but they speak with a lisp. And the lyrics go something like this: "Daddeh fingah, daddeh fingah, whewe am fwuff? Hewe am fwuff, here am fwuff! How daddeh do? Mummah fingah, mommy fingah, whewe am fwuff? Here am fwuff, here am fwuff! How mummah do?" I try searching for the lyrics. Like Baby shark, it apparently belongs to a song called "finger family". However, while the correct lyrics are provided, the ones in the video weren't. And there's hundreds of these videos. Some with real human actors. Others with very minimalist animation. All singing the same song with the same exact lisp. Sure, the voices are different, but the pronunciation is almost always the same I had to exit youtube kids for a moment and search on normal youtube to find the original song. I managed to find an old video from over a decade ago, that has only for about ten thousand views. In contrast, these newer videos get millions There are some even more bizarre ones. Like a version where the finger family all has skulls on the fingers. Or the one where Hitler and Stalin are the "mother" and "father" figure respectively. On a dare, I decided to try and see what happen if I typed a random name with "five finger family". True enough, there was five finger family videos of anything from Kamen Rider to Doomguy to Agent 47. With all of them speaking with the lisp, and using the word "fwuffy." After a while, it was too much for me to bear. I stopped watching, and decided to watch the movie Predator to get my mind off the infantile speech and mannerisms 18th February 202X I met Iskandar today. We both entered university in the same year, and first met in the Literature 101 class. Although Iskandar does have a minor in Literature, his focus is more on linguistics. Also, while I only had a mere bachelors, he received honours, and went on to pursue a Masters. He too entered the workforce as a teacher and is currently teaching his first cohort of students. Due to his qualifications, he currently teaches English at a nearby junior college. Nevertheless, the two of us make the time to meet each and other for a quick chat over a breakfast. Ideally, one with kaya toast and coffee. And today, I shared with him the videos I had found. "I've seen this before. They're made by content farms." "Content farm?" "It is the algorithm. Basically, companies look for what the most popular thing, then churn out cheap and simple content to get clicks. The clicks generate ad revenue, and that is how they make their money. I've been following this phenomenon for a few years now, though there has been an interesting development. I think you've picked up on it too." Being rather puzzled, I asked what he meant "Have you ever noticed that in these videos, they never use the first person singular personal pronoun?" For a brief moment, Iskandar said it so fast that I did not catch what he meant "They don't use 'I', basically." "Oh, I noticed that. The speech is also very limited, and almost always use a lisp." "Indeed. There'll be an announcement about this soon. They've actually been studying this problem, even in our alma mater at NUS, and MOE is likely to make an announcement about it soon." "Announcement about what?" "You'll see." 25th February 202X Met Mei today. She asked me why I didn't take her to meet my relatives during Chinese New Year. I joked that, by doing so, I was guaranteed to get more angpaos from my elders. She promptly whacked me on the head <3 Jokes aside, we talked a bit today. We used to go out a lot, back in JC, but we weren't really dating. I lost contact with her during NS, and by that time, she started dating another guy. However, she broke up with him not too long ago. We did date once, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to do it again. She seemed keen though. I guess we'll see where it goes from here. 11th March 202X Went on a date with Mei today. Mei has always been different from myself. While I went into the humanities because I had a fascination for English Literature, especially 19th century literature and earlier, she did the sensible thing most Singaporeans would do, and stayed in the sciences. As she got older though, she developed more of an interested in business, and started for her business degree at out alma mater at NUS. But she always had an interest in the sciences, with one of her quirks being chatting about some random science tidbit or news, that she came across. And today she wouldn't shut up about talking animals "Did you know that animals can't really talk?" I thought it was silly for her to say that, as I pointed out parrots and ravens. "That's just mimicking. The only animal we know that approximated a conversation with its owner was the parrot Alex, and even that is contested. And there's a simple reason why animals don't really talk - they don't have Wernicke's and Broca's areas. "What's that?" "They're the parts of our brain that are linked to speech production, as well as ascribing meaning to speech." "And you're saying animals don't have that?" "Actually, there are some animals that have parts *like* it. Such as singing mice. And the parrots that you mentioned. But these parts are analogous to their role, not exactly like it. It is like asking, why can't a dog talk like a human. Theoretically, a more advanced animal like a dolphin or a chimpanzee has these areas, but they're not super developed." Alright, so what is the point of you mentioning this, I wondered "Well, they're currently looking into ways of better mimicking the areas I mentioned in animals. As well as transplanting them into animals such as cats and dogs." "So, like, talking animals?" "Precisely! Think about how much better it would be to be able to communicate with your dog if it was able to just talk to you directly, and not just in barks." "But aren't there like physiological differences between a dog and a human that would make such speech impossible for them?" "Well, technically, birds should not be able to mimic humans. And yet parrots mimic humans well enough. What they're trying to do is improve the parrot to a level where, as opposed to just repeating simple lines, it can have full on conversations with its owner, the way Alex did." And then she started going even further into the science of it. As I started to nod off, I did the one that I could to slowly get her mind off on talking about neurobiology "There's this Teochew restaurant I haven't been to yet. You okay with that for dinner?" 1st of April 202X Well, that was a shock. And the fact that it happened today didn't really help matters. When most of the people in the English Department hear it, we thought they were pulling a fast one. But of course, the ministry would never joke. And even if they did, the effort put into it, along with what I was seeing in the news, was too elaborate, too deliberate to possible be "just a joke". The Ministry of Education just announced that there was a rampant problem of "Fluffspeak". Basically, primary school children, particularly below the age of 10, are starting to speak in a severely stunted form of English. I had given remedial classes for children who speak English poorly, and who were brought up to speak Singlish or Mandarin, so this was not a new phenomenon. But the description of the language reminded me of the videos I saw back in Chinese New Year. Of a severely stunted form of English, where each and every ‘r’ and ‘l’ is replaced with a ‘w’. Larger words are replaced with certain conventions like "thinkie-pwaces" instead of brain and "seeing-pwaces" instead of eyes. And there is no singular personal pronoun. There is no "I". Only "fluffy." It sounds like a joke, but according to the memorandum from the Ministry of Education, at least a few thousand primary school children have been found to be speaking in nothing but fluffspeak, and have started failing their English classes, and the number is growing. The problem is worldwide, and was first noticed in American schools. This apparently, led to research into the problem, some of which NUS was involved in. Just tonight, I saw a newscaster speak, very seriously "about the growing problem of Fluffspeak among children." The whole thing just feels too incredulous. I have to talk to Iskandar about this as soon as I can. 4th April 202X "Yeah, it's a constructed language. Have you ever heard of Newspeak?" I confessed that I didn't. "Its from George Orwell's 1984." "The only Orwell I read was Animal Farm, and that was for literature class in secondary school." "Well, it is an example of a constructed language. A better example would be Tolkien's Evlish." "That, I am familiar with." I am a huge sucker for fantasy stuff, especially Tolkien's works, as I continued, "It is really amazing how Tolkien would create entire languages for the races and world he created." "Constructed languages aren't a new thing, but fluffspeak is incredibly unique because its AI-generated." "AI-generated? But that would mean-" "Yes. The algorithm created this language." We were having breakfast again. Being a quick but meticulous eater, Iskandar had already finished his eggs and toast. Iskandar had brought a briefcase, where he was showing printouts of screenshots he had captured, as well as a tablet. "A lot of the data has been lost, and only a fraction of it was archived or archive.org. But, at some point, google searches started processing the word 'pway' instead of 'play', and started generating results for searches and songs that used the word "pway". "That is just a typo isn't it?" "More like a mispronunciation - these searches started around about the time audio searches were predominant." I wasn't impressed. Iskandar seemed to be suggesting that an entire language was constructed, by algorithm, based on baby-talk from children too young to be using google search. "It is a bit more than that." Iskandar then proceeds to show me pictures of comments found on videos about baby versions of cartoon animals. Of note was a photo a woman took of a Baby Yoda figure. Another was a photo a woman took of a baby smurf. Both pictures had the women pretend that the baby was speaking to them in a type of baby talk. One of them read the following: "Hawing wunch wike mummah pwomise." "It's been a recurring thing. Older women, and perhaps men, pretending that baby-talk consists of replacing 'l's and 'r's with 'w's, as well as children with lisps adding to the situation. There was the influence of uWu language." "uWu?" Iskandar then switches on his tablet. After a few swipes, he reaches a video on youtube. The video has only one static image, of a girl with two circular eyes, and a mouth shaped like a small w. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mBqm8uO4Cg As the human speaker continues talking, the language structure and speech starts getting simpler and simpler, until it sounds like baby-talk. "This is considered a joke type of speech, but it matches what the search algorithms have founds when collated with the baby-talk searches generated by both adults and children with the lisp." I was starting to get a sense of what Iskandar was talking about. But there was one thing that seemed unusual "Alright, but why "fwuffy". Why is the word "fwuffy" used instead of 'I'?" "We don't know. But some people at MIT noticed the similarity between the onomatopoeic sound of "fuwa fuwa" with "fluffy". There's also the Hassenfeld cartoons that keep using "fluff" or "fluffy" to describe their properties. That's still disputed though." Okay, but I don't really see how this a language. To me it is more like a dialect. A creole or a slang, whatever you linguists call it. Like our own native Singlish." "That is true - most of it is based in the English language. But it does remind me a lot of newspeak, which was treated as a language." Time was starting to run out, and I had to get back to work. I tried to make a closing statement "Well, all I know is, having to give more remedial lessons so that children don't speak like retards is going to be a bitch." "I wouldn't be too disparaging about this language, if I were you James." He then swipes his tablet one more time, and shows me a webpage. It reads "Fluffspeak Research." "The team at MIT started this webpage where they compiled their findings on fluffspeak. In addition, they're trying to get people to contribute stories and ideas written in fluffspeak. They want to see how far they can get with furthering and improving the language that was created by the algorithm." Sounds like a massive waste of time, I thought. "Some people would have said Tolkien was wasting his time when creating Elvish." "Tolkien was trying to depict the language of a proud people, and was also building a mythology. In contrast this seems to be trying to make an entire language based around babytalk." "And isn't that interesting?" I brushed him off. We said our goodbyes, and head back to work. I still got that website though. The url was memorable enough that I jotted it down on a piece of paper. Maybe I'll check it out when I really got nothing better to do. (like, never!) 22nd May 202X It has been three weeks since I started my first remedial class for students speaking fluffspeak. As much as I think that the problem is overblown, there seem to be this growing alarm concerning the phenomenon. I never would have imagined that getting a child at the age of 10 to say "play" instead of "pway" would seem so difficult. But that is what it has come to. In the first two weeks, most of the children I have been handling with were 9 or younger, and clearly had too much access to the internet, especially youtube. The solution seemed to be as simple - deny these impressionable children access to mobile devices such as the internet, and school them through extensive English classes to correct their speech. But this ten year old child is the eldest case I have dealt with. And he is far more intelligent than the others. He has taken to calling himself the leader of the class. The "smawty". He is also the rowdiest. On a few occasions, the class collectively threw paper planes at me, and this was an act co-ordinated by this one child. I managed to single him out. Speak to him and his parents directly. And that was when I learnt an uncomfortable truth about this one particularly precocious child. He was doing this all willingly. He spoke to me normally. He can write a sentence normal, without replace the "ls" and "rs" with "w"s. And he can say eyes instead of "seeing-pwaces." He just chooses not to. But, why? "Its fun." He then shows me a video that he saw on youtube. Of course, I had to use a smartphone, but I searched and found the video. It's a cover of Earth Angel. Done entirely, in fluffspeak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRmRckBDbWo Looking at the description of the video, I notice that it ties back to the MIT website that Iskandar mentioned. This was one of the videos that their group had created, in exploring pre-existant media, "translated" into fluffspeak. Maybe I should check this website out. Maybe. 2nd June 202X On a whim, I decided to check out the Fluffspeak Research page that Iskandar mentioned. There's quite a wordy writeup by a professor at MIT known as Prof Minsky regarding the nature of "flufffspeak" as the basis of AI generated language, cobbled together by the algorithm. The researchers are looking into how this language can be fine-tuned through further user input. The head of the project is a Professor Syme Minksy. I took note of her email address. The message boards for the project are divided into neat areas. There's a submission box where people can send in their fluffspeak generated pieces anonymously. Then there are the message boards where people post their actual written works, rendered in fluffspeak, online, and discuss about it. Some of it lacks imagination - a person would take a passage from Twilight, or Harry Potter, and then replace the language with that of uWu language instead of the proper fluffspeak. But then there are some people who have written an entire short story, with an original plot and everything, but in fluffspeak. Reading the article is hard as hell, but, given that it supposed to be a more advanced version of babytalk, the story can be understood after a little re-reading. There is even a section where people can host live discussions, utilizing an IRC client, to chat in "fluffspeak". If they chat in any other 'normal' language, they have to indicate so, or be booted from the server While browsing the site, for a brief moment, I see Iskandar's name pops up. Looks like he's quite active here. 16 June 202X I did it. I took the plunge. I submitted my first story in fluffspeak. I did it just for fun. Just wrote a story about a guy going to a shop to buy a can of spaghetti, or "skettis". But I wrote it all in fluffspeak. 9th July 202X Finally had the chance to talk to Professor Minsky, the head of the project. Well, talk as in talk over an internet messenger. At the age of 50, she is a Professor of Linguistics. However, the programme that she is working on has included experts from the fields of artificial intelligence, as well as psychology and neurology. There is a relationship between the development of a language and a theory of mind, and for machine learning to be able to construct and recommend a rudimentary language suggests a development of a theory of mind. Whether this means that the internet would develop into a Skynet 2.0 is a separate (though also important question), but the larger implication is the nature of the language being developed. Being based of babytalk, as Minsky puts it, fluffspeak could be interpreted as the way a developing toddler or child sees the world. Thus, and theoretically, any complex work of fiction by an adult could be processed and simplified in fluffspeak. But what about simple english, I asked her. After all, wikipedia entries in simple english exist for this same purpose The professor then points out that simple english still assumes that the speaker is an adult with a minimal amount of education. A layman, so to speak. In contrast, fluffspeak was developed by a machine understanding of how a prepubescent child thinks and talks. As she puts it, refining fluffspeak, as well as understanding the children and people who use it, would help determine the formation of language, especially the transition from the more rudimentary baby-talk to more complex and refined forms of language. In addition, the use of fluffspeak could allow for the introduction of larger, more complex adult concepts into a simpler medium for children to understand. I pointed out to the professor that education departments across the world, including the local MOE, have been trying to discourage fluffspeak, at least amongst children. She understands this, and says that she is currently restricting it to among adults, as well as children who are already using fluffspeak. She then points out that, in my remedial classes, I should be using documents to track the specific lisps and sentence structures that fluffspeak users are working with. I admit that I had not noticed this. I then point out to the Professor that, as with anything on the internet, there is that danger that something bad would always slip through. Chatbots have been observed to pick up negative comments and biases from the users, and the same seemed to apply to fluffspeak. The professor admitted this is a concern, and mentioned that, for the moment, the fluffspeak material that is submitted is analysed to be free from profanities as well as graphic behaviour and violence 12 July 202X Spoke to Calvin. Although Minsky is the head of the program, Calvin could be said to be doing most of the legwork related to the program. Minsky mainly works with a hypothesis, as well as understanding the practical and physical element of fluffspeak. The hard coding, and the algorithms, however, are all Calvin's work. Calvin had already received her Master’s in Computer Science and is currently working on a thesis paper related towards the basis of language generation through algorithms. It is not a small wonder that she ended up being attached to Minsky's program. Even though they are from two different fields, the fluffspeak phenomena had interested both female professionals. There are some differences between the two women, though. Minsky is clearly an idealist and also a little no-nonsense. She has been quite harsh in how she moderates what goes in and what doesn't for the fluffspeak programme. Calvin seems a more relaxed. A lot more approachable. I can see myself spending more time conversing with Calvin, even though its mostly on matters unrelated to the program. 3rd August 202X I have upload about five stories to the message board now. Four of them were original material, while the first was Roald Dahl's "The Great Automatic Grammatizator" completely rendered in fluffspeak. Some other people have been more adventurous. So far, we have had the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron all rendered in fluffspeak by many different contributors, a number working together. The study is currently limited to the English speaking world, but there is already some discussion about how different languages might generate their own fluffspeak, if given time. There's however, an alarming trend I noticed. Although the board is heavily moderated, at times, there are a few people who, while attempting to converse in fluffspeak, start describing sexual actions. The motive behind this seems to be a form of ageplay. Due to fluffspeak's basis in a more simplistic form of speaking, some people are inclined to use fluffspeak to partake in a form of ageplay. Having spoken to Calvin, the problem already started within the first week the board was open to the public. The mods have been working day and night to ensure depictions of sex and violence are not described in fluffspeak, other than what has already been written in fiction. There is the concern of censorship, but Calvin mentions that the focus is on making ' a working language' first. 9th August 202X Was bored for most of National Day. Decided to have lunch with Iskandar at the Gluttons Bay. Iskandar was having Nasi Lemak while I had carrot cake. The two of us conversed quite a bit about Fluffspeak, and the program Calvin was running. I mentioned a nagging point that is on my mind "I do think the language is interesting, but I feel like the approach to it has been rather skewed." "What makes you say that?" "We're basing this more of what 'we' think babytalk and childtalk is like, not what 'childtalk' actually is." "I should correct you there, James. We're working with what the AI thinks constitutes as babytalk and childtalk. The generation of the videos by content farms, and their subsequent pronunciations and language augmentation, was based on recommendations by the algorithm. Youtube kept pushing videos with the lisp and incorrect English as the correct choice, which children picked up on. As children contributed more content online, the 'language' started developing. At this point, I'd say we're just merely giving it a more definite form." "So you're saying that we're trying to 'perfect' that language?" "Basically, yeah. It is like that one guy who converted 'the Little Prince' into Singlish. Singlish is often look at derisively by our local government, but, given that it is our native Creole, a lot of Singapore writers take pride in it the way the Scots do with their language and English." "But Singlish is tied to our culture. What culture are we making fluffspeak for?" "Who knows?" said Iskandar, as he shrugged. "I like to think it is for 'us'. The people in our group." ~ I didn't get to meet Mei tonight. I saw the fireworks alone. 1st September 202X Today was teacher's day. Did the same the thing we did the past two years. Fun and games in the morning. Small part in the class. Finger food, candies and cakes. "Fwuffy wub candy!" And the one idiot speaking fluffspeak. Had to correct the child. "Henry, its 'love'" "S-s-sowwy Mister Tan. Henwy wiw-wil-will tw-tw-try harder." ~ Teacher's Day is a school holiday, but only the children get to go home early. There was a slight party mood in the department though, as an occasion like this meant that we too would be celebrating with finger food, cake, and even ice-cream in the fridge. Now was a good time to hang out with the other English teachers in the department and catch up. I've gotten to know Mr. Choe, who joined in the last year, and Ms. Ho, whose been around for ages. The topic of fluffspeak came up rather unexpectedly. Mr Choe, in what I could only describe as gentle but youthful aggression, made his opinion clear. "We have to rout out this fluffspeak." "Rout out? I mean, we're just correcting the way the children are speaking." "And it is not enough. This incorrect use of English is spreading. It is a literal rape of the beauty of English, and we cannot tolerate it." "By that measure," said Ms Ho, "you would say Singlish is a rape of English." "I would, yes. I don't want any of my students to speak a lick of Singlish in my class. And fluffspeak is worse. They sound like literal retards." "And what do you think, Mr. Tan?" A slight sweat trickled down my forehead. Although I was on the MIT website, unlike Iskandar, I adopted a nickname. "I think a bizarre form of English is a unique expression of creativity." Mr Choe glared at me in disapproval. "I disagree, Jim. I think we can be very creative with English without having to work with a corruption of it. English should be kept pure." 20th December 202X I went out on a date with Mei today. It was rather sweet. She wouldn't shut up about some recent developments in biology, but, other than that, we had fun. We were walking along the bridge to Marina bay when she popped a question to me "James?" "Yes, Mei?" "Have you ever thought of leaving Singapore?" I was a bit taken aback by the suggestion. Aside from the time I trained in Brunei and Taiwan for National Service, I have never travelled out of Singapore. (Well, aside from the occasional trip to JB and that's more to get chewing gum as well as the cheaper products from Malaysia) "No. Why do you ask? Have you travelled?" "No." She then looks over the railing. The Orchard city lights brighten the December evening. One can see the rainclouds above. There is a gentle wind, slowly building, but not yet indicative of a storm. For now though, it blows against Mei's hair, its beauty wavering. "I just cannot imagine my whole life here. I do want to see the world. I mean, I have family in Malaysia, but I also have some distant relatives in Hong Kong. And China. I even have cousins in the US. And an uncle in Canada. And I always wanted to go to Greece. Or Spain. Or even Ethiopia." "Ethiopia?" I scoffed. "That's in Africa isn't it? Can't imagine why anyone would go there." "I beg your pardon, but Ethiopia was one of the most advanced countries in Africa for the longest time! It was also never truly colonized by a Western power. It is a country with a rich history!" I felt a bit sheepish. I apologized. "Its okay. Maybe the view I'm saying is too rosy. But I don't want to be too landlocked to this country. I do want to see the world." 3rd February 202X+1 Took Mei with me to visit one of my relatives for Chinese New Year. I had my reunion dinner the night before with immediate family, as she did, but since we're now going out, I guess it made sense that my family knew . And true enough, this time around, I didn't get the red packets Worst still, the dreaded question came around. "So when are you two going to get married and start continuing the family name?" Jesus, grandma, we're taking it slow. For a good hour though, Mei ended up playing poker with a cousin of mine. Said cousin is a biologist, and they keep talking about something called a 'chimera'. I heard about that from Greek mythology. "Well we're not talking about Greek mythology dear, we're talking about an actual animal. One they're developing apparently." I rolled my eyes. Didn’t interest me. While I waited for their game to conclude, I spent some time at the porch, and looked at the garden, where the children of some of my relatives were playing "You can't catch me, you can't catch me!" "Siwwy dummeh! Smawty am da fastest! Wiww catch fwen!" I had to blink my eyes. The girl who was running was able to speak English well. However, the boy chasing her had to be at least 11 to 12 years old, and was clearly speaking fluffspeak It turned out that he was the son of one of my distant relatives "Yeah," he sighed, with a forlorn look on his flace. "He can speak Mandarin well. But his English is nothing but that stupid lisp. That 'fluffspeak'. And we sent him for classes, but he keeps lapsing back" As the boys keeps running and speaking with the lisp, I wonder if the remedials we provide are truly effective. 10 June 202X+1 Its coming to be the first full year since I joined the fluffspeak community It feels that I lead this double life. During the day, I spend most of the time, teaching proper English, and conducting remedial classes to correct young children and prevent them from speaking Fluffspeak. But in the evening, I spend an hour or two reading the Fluffspeak message boards. There are a number of good stories written in fluffspeak, as well as some interesting performative arts done with the language. I do think that young children shouldn't speak fluffspeak, but I can appreciate fluffspeak as a creative outlet for someone of my age. I hope MIT will keep the site around. 16th June 202X+1 They shut down the site. The move shocked all of us. I went to check the twitter, and Professor Minsky states that the programme had already reached its research goals, and thus, was ended. That was all the explanation given. No more than that. I'm angry. I'm frustrated. I spent almost a year, writing all kinds of stuff, stuff that I did not save, and uploaded it to this site. All gone. A tonne of work, taken away from us. Replies were disabled. Something tells me that they expected the backlash. I sent an email to Calvin. She might know a bit more. And I must to speak to Iskandar soon. ~To Be Continued~
This is an IGNITION EVENT that starts qualifying way back to June, features SEA + TW/HK. The prize is $20,000 and that's a lot for a minor region, it's the 1st big championship in this area How does the SEA Area scene kick up currently? a lot is going well, the region did embrace the game and organizations are picking it up. Whether if it's a very top known in-country,or it's an org that you might recognize from PUBG, LoL, or PUBG Mobile doing surprise ventures. The Three countries going good here is Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia especially Thailand who has the first $3000 tournament with over 2000 signups, and most tournaments with uncapped signups can easily hit 300-500+ teams there are also a ton of non-Ignition events running actively around here so you can see that the scene is growing organic, its like NA in a smaller scale but without Ignition No Vietnam because the game have VNG as co-publisher (which took over Garena for all Riot except LoL/TFT) and the game has to undergo approval just like China -------------------------------------------
Streams - They do have per language but, for English is
The Teams MOTV and KILO both qualifiers from their country. MOTV has been competing regularly in Local Tournaments so they do have a good amount of experience BOOM invited from Indonesia and you probably know this org very well, at one point they even have Brazilian CS team, the roster features known CS players like Adrnking and Sys AAA invited from Thailand, The org is known for one of the most popular Point Blank (Korean MMO Shooter) team, and in VAL they are strongest TH team atm, Only few who can bring them down (by few I mean 1-2 teams from over 30 matches). It features all CS players as well and they had a female player too - JinNy -------------------------------------------
The Teams everyone except ahq is qualifiers. MORPH is an org known through PUBG Mobile, they signed the ID Qual winner XORGEE, Sharper is an org known for their success in COD Mobile and the roster is pretty good, not AAA Level but capable of LZ is another org signing unrated, this name is formerly a CS 1.6 team that dated way back to 2007-2009 during the Asian Cyber Games/late WCG era, all of the roster are experienced CS player in the local level ahq is potentially the top SEA/TW teams at the moment (They are also the first team to beat AAA in a match, combining with the recap above you can know how good ahq is) and you don't need an introduction to the org I'm sure you know them from LoL, the roster do have Iyo and Milk, who played actively in PUBG Taiwan league before -------------------------------------------
The Teams no known background for the OOW and SD team, but mostly a comprise of local players make the cut so nothing much here The invites, however, are a different story tAfz is a very old name in Thai Esports, originated from being a team in the original Special Force (Soldier Front - a Korean MMO Shooter) and has good records over the years. The name shine when they won the 2017 Special Force 2 (SKILL in EU) World Championship - Two of the players z3r1w and YokChi are part of that Roster. Also, they have Changee, who is....Only 14 years old and he plays Sova Adroit from the Philippines is basically like AAA. The best PH team at the moment also features JessieVash, yes the former DOTA2 player who has jumped to OW before coming here -------------------------------------------
The Teams Same, only SMG is invited here but the qual teams are interesting First, with Thailand Attitude, a team fully comprises of ex-Overwatch Contenders players. Mostly are players from the Xavier Esports OW team that competes in Contenders Pacific LEGENDS has NuL who is.. 35 Years old, it's crazy but he competes for a lot of games so it links together Paper Rex is an org, they are known for their CS team which is a former BOOT Dreamscape (once top SEA CS team). They signed Vindicta the winner of SG Quals Lastly is SMG, or Still Moving Under Gunfire. Owned by a Singaporean Singer JJ Lin. This org host multiple games including a Malaysian PUBG Mobile, Shanghai PUBG PC and in the past, a Taiwan Arena of Valor team which have won a major championship (it's where SMG gets popular from) The roster includes tons of experienced CS:GO player, one of the notable are ZesBeeW ------------------------------------------- I hope this summary does give a good view of this tournament, and also the scene which I believe this subreddit deserves more Asian content,
